  1. 3D Studio Max ? 3675 $ - unghh - can´t afford that kind of super stuff Welcome to the pw club, we like 3d max users, pw needs some pro skinning.
  2. Blender - Gimp - Photoshop ?
  3. Who came up with the design ? You ? The design is very well done: top menu - side bar - body - colors, font type/size, footer, => no out of the css box blue and black, but individual attractive style and pro look. Good shooted pictures too. I saw, and you mentioned, that you are using your own css grid cutegrids. Checked your cutegrids website, very well explained with examples. Thanks for letting me this find also, a real nice, easy and effective grid. How long did it take to code this responsive css grid ? +1 website for your portfolio. p.s. at the bottom, just above </body> </html> you have a </script> tag that I can not trace back in the <script></script> stack. I wonder: does it have some closing function like something similar that is done in css with tricks like this: <div style="clear:both;"> </div> ?

    Hosting advice

Hi Macrura, after weeks of testing with abantecart, I abandoned it. Lost a lot of time with it ? In a way yes. I was enthousiastic about it but in the end: multi language doesn't work and back end lacks basic needed shop administration features. (discovered by my boss, so it is always good to let someone else look at the back end features) I'm glad you mentioned prestashop, cause it gives me a new focus after abantecart. I tried prestashop in the past and was not happy about front end performance. That was ps 1.5.x then, but I noticed the 1.6 release not so long ago with a beautiful and responsive front ! I am testing it now and I am very curious about front performance and seo in the backend. Technically the backend is one of the best I have seen for maintenance but not sure about shop administration. I have to say that if you google around on ps you will bump into one of the best articles about how to do seo.
  7. After weeks of testing with abantecart I now decided to leave it for what it is. I don't know to what extend I can say that I lost a lot of time with abantecart as a webshop system, because I also learned many things in that same time. My advice: do not use abantecart as a webshop. Multi language does not work properly and the backend lacks decent handling, storing, mailing and printing of shop/client pdf billing, invoice, status, and no embedded online package tracking (dhl)

Did you run ps performance tests on an online test server ? If not I would advice you to do. Try a bunch of categories and products. My experience is that ps is slow, especially the front end.

    At a crossroads

Thanks for sharing this with us. What you are saying I recognize happening the last 5 years in my own customer field, even similar prices you mentioned 300 - 350 - 1000 €. Not only in websites but in general also. I see more and more china shops popup and more people buying cheap china stuff. They care less for the quality shops. So I guess it's also part of a bad going economy. It's not something you can solve just by trying to find "better" clients, or telling them that if they want a cheap solution, they have to go to another website builder. On top of that there is a lot of competition in building websites. The bigger clients/companies won't ask for your services because they already know an established coder/designer. Other competition is a growing number of handy wordpress guys who quickly plug and play copy and paste something with a theme. Another problem is that some clients are impressed by how it looks on the outside and don't care much about what is going on in the back end. Hence the growing popularity of cheap trick wordpress. I think the old "divide and rule" will help something. Just add out of the box (templated) websites to your services. Tell the client if he goes for a cheap out of the box website, you can always add more needed functionality to it afterwards, payed of course. Just tell this very clearly in the beginning to your client, so there will be no "yes but . . . ." afterwards. Further you can use the experience and knowledge you already have not only for building websites for others but also for building and exploiting your own on-line shop.
  16. Many thanks for posting this. This was exactly what I was trying to put on the table. First time I read about such a solution. With solutions like this we can confront ourselves confidently with our clients about this returning ghost in the host and now even have something to put in our contracts that does not look daft anymore but very constructively. (The switch normally takes about 60 seconds) I also like now having the freedom to offer this service up to the clients website importance. Perfect ! Can you tell something more about your own temporary backup server, dns failover and that up script. (already searching with google)
  17. Sorry to hear that Matthew. Things look okay again at Servint. Anyway, this raises the question what we tell our clients who is end responsible in such cases ? The Sitebuilder or the Hoster ? I mean it is not our fault if a Hoster goes down but do we talk about this before we start building the clients site ?
  18. I don't know about you guys but that is the reason why I never register the clients domain by the same company that is going to host the website. Register by a register company and host at a hoster company. Hoster A down ? Point domain to Hoster B and upload a copy. These days DNS propagation is less than 6 hours. Edit: instead of changing dns settings, use url forwarding. It works instantly! Visitors won't even see the change in host url if configured properly and it is only necessary during the time of primary host fail. I do the same with my email accounts. I never register an email address with my ISP. Works for me. Would like to know though what works for you guys.
  19. Hi, I have a question about google adwords. In the past google always showed a detailed overview of how the money you invested in adwords was used and processed by google adwords. But that has changed. These days I don´t get a detailed overview anymore but only a simple graph with click points. Google just charges money without showing the details like before in the past. My question now is do you guys have similar experience in this matter ? Do or did you also notice a downgrade in information details that google shows you how your adword invested money is spent ?
  20. Thanks Ryan, looks this also comes in very handy to quickly setup a blog function.
