In need for a Media Manager solution

Hello there!

Since I started creating sites with ProcessWire I wished there was a central media management option. You know - a place where you can upload all sorts of data (well, mostly images) to use them throughout the whole website. It is something that nearly every other CMS offers and many clients of me which used Wordpress or Typo3 are used to this kind of media management and it's kind of hard to tell them that this is not possible (in that way) with ProcessWire.

I know from the past that there was a Media Manager Module from @kongondo but this module seems not to have been updated in years.

Are there any other solutions or techniques that you developers use?

Not a media manager, but it can fulfill certain requirements: https://processwire.com/modules/process-media-lister/ and "combined" with this https://processwire.com/talk/topic/29985-file-mover/ they can fulfill even more requirements. Not being overly complex, Robin will probably be able to update these whenever needed. That's an advantage....

I think Media Manager is in the process of being open sourced? I think this is a module worth polishing and it's the closest to a media manager solution I can think of.

Yes I  already send a PM to kongondo asking where to download the latest version of the Media Manager. This module still looks very promising. But on the website https://mediamanager.kongondo.com/ neither a documentation nor a download link is available.

The problem with all paid modules kongondo used to sell is that there is no documentation. My (paid) copy of MediaManager never worked properly (the same is true for Padloper 2) and there is no support at all, so I really try to avoid anything that comes from him...

This has been an interesting pain-point for my usage with ProcessWire. I am curious why we still don't have this functionality available. Thanks for the heads-up @cpx3 on those third-party modules that you mention. I had been eyeing those, but I will steer clear now.

Until we get an "official" media manger module we need to make some workarounds. Let me tell you about my personal solution for this:

I am using the FileMover module from @Robin S for copying images from a global "media library" field (that is placed inside a dedicated "media library" template ) to any of my image fields.

Please have look at robins comment here where he extended the functionality of his module through a hook. In this case you can open the image library page through a modal with a click from any image field. 

There is also a small screencast that shows this – for me this is a really good workaround. Please have a look for yourself and give it a try (and some credits to robin!).
