That is what I thought - but then, I always get this sort of thing wrong. In the end, the fact that the page is being produced dynamically is neither here nor there - it is what is being requested that is important, and that is just a link to a particular file or file type with an address to the directory in which it is stored. Yet another support chappy that knows even less than I do? I always find that upsetting!
-
Okay, scrub that! Plenty of other places that get read by developers ... I had heard of voting scams on other sites before, but hadn't realised that it extended there too. It is the unreliable nature of the internet, sadly. Do devs ever read actual paper magazines these days?
-
Ah, that is a pity. Somewhere there is a wordpress addon that does this for Wordpress. If you can track that down, there may be some clues in there - see how they achieve it. Joss

Evening Matthew Er .... which link?

HI Kevnm, welcome to the friendliest (and occasionally silliest) forum in existence. Sorry everyone is so late in answering your post ... must be faster!!! (Or, in my case, would help if I was younger and cleverer!) You are right, there is no paid or guaranteed support with ProcessWIre (though as it grows bigger I am sure someone somewhere may start supplying such a service) and as such is a different business model. But I have to say, these are some of the most responsive forums I have ever come across - though quite what would happen if 10,000 users turned up with question ... *gulp* Still, the look on Ryan's face would be worth photographing. I think there is an interesting on going general discussion about support throughout the business sector generally. I tend to use my brother as a bench mark. Despite having been very senior in Sun Microsystems in the UK and Xerox, he is not technical, and now that he runs a boutique with his wife he is relying on local support for computers and websites and so on. Generally speaking the phrase "I am getting ripped off" seems to turn up regularly. And, as he has found out to his cost, you are not to know the true quality of that support until you actually need it. In his case, two years into a project, something went wrong and the monthly support fee he had paid did not match the fact that the company could not solve his problem. (I solved it for him in 2 minutes flat eventually, and I am not an admin by any stretch of the administration.) If you pay $2000 a year to a company for support, at the end of the day you have to make sure that you are actually getting your monies worth. It should not be some over priced insurance system, it should be paid for work. If you are paying a lot more than that, then the company better have some amazing reasons for charging so much. I have no idea whether EE is good value or not (I have no way of judging) but it certainly is the case that if they lose people from the bottom of the ladder then they risk loosing future big spenders, which may be why they have had a change of heart. Have fun with PW - the rest of us are!!

Hi Digitex Can't you just do it through your htaccess file - basically, set it up so that files that end with jpg, png and so on can only be referred directly from your own site. See here: http://net.tutsplus.com/tutorials/other/5-fun-and-practical-htaccess-solutions/ (I haven't tried this, by the way)

Okay, now I am seeing it - test: Happy New Year EDIT: Okay, so that was not linked just now. So it is not automatic .... who is playing?

Hey Ryan, How about getting PW listed on http://www.opensourcecms.com/developers/register.php ? Then we can all run off and say how nice it is! Joss

I have set up a Webmin/Virtualmin box and having exactly the same issue. Just as a note for anyone else in the future. Having said that, although it solves the problem, it still says that it cannot detect the server (or something like that). I did read somewhere that perhaps it should be SymLinksIfOwnerMatch - anyone have any thoughts? This is an area I know nuffin about! I found my life was a lot happier if I commented out the line while it was still htaccess.txt, by the way - sort of felt smoother ...
-
Ah ... little typo there! By the way, follow symlinks an issue ... needs to be commented out with Virtualmin. Oh, the infamy!

How can I specify default value for certain input field?
Joss replied to PawelGIX's topic in General Support
Hi I know this is an old topic, but I was just searching for this. A default value for me is, as someone mentioned above, a pre-filled value that will be used if you don't replace it with anything. For instance, I have a field that asks for a "span" value for a box. If it is not filled in, I want it to default to 4. Now, I can easily achieve this in the template, but the problem is that the user cannot see that it defaults to 4 - so having the field pre-filled not only gives me a starting value, but also informs the user. First day of the year here in "old" England. Spent it rigging up a little dev server with Ubunto, Webmin/VIrtualmin and Samba and then trying to work out why it doesn't work. Oh, joy..... PS: Now I am just going to set up a couple of PW thingies as Server Templates for quick developinginging... Joss HNY - (Abbreviated to help those infested with spyware...)

I suppose this is down to scalability in the end. If you have a very clear idea what you need and how much power you want, then a dedicated machine might prove a very controllable option. If however, you may want to increase scalability, then a VPS or cloud solution may give more versatility, both in price and power. Although things like Amazon can be pricey, I like the idea that you can scale DOWN as well as up! Also, there is the clients' needs (business-wise rather than technical). If they have no need for a dedicated server for themselves as such, then they may or may not be happy being tied into a developers machine; if the relationship goes sour, it gets very, very complicated. I look at this from the point of view of buying a car from a dealer. When you buy, it makes sense to take advantage of the dealers servicing options and so on. But you can choose to make that a contractual relationship or a casual one - if you just tend to use them out of habit rather than because you have welded yourself to them, when they mess up you can simply go somewhere else; you don't have to first of all get the car and the car keys back from them. In my main business (music production and writing), clients use me because they like me, not because they are contractually or technically bound to me. If I tried that, then they would go elsewhere pretty damned quick! I think at least part of the IT world has got itself into a mess because it has tried to enforce client loyalty rather than keep the client by offering good services and building a good relationship.

Haha - you have a community of imaginative souls here .... I am sure someone will have a moment of brilliance! (though it might require drying out after Christmas celebrations first....)

Sounds particularly useful for development - which package do you use?

Happy Holidays! (From somewhere beneath a very uncooperative turkey who, should it just sit still for five minutes, would be magically transformed into my dinner!!!) And here is to a very interesting and well and truly Wired new year! Joss

I am not a graphic designer, but if I was briefing for a design to support a brand identity, I would stay away from playing with the letters or the name. Process Wire, as a phrase, works very well both in a branding sense and in a descriptive sense. Moving to PW is a useful chatting short-cut, but no longer delivers the brand phrase or, indeed any brand values. So, in that case, the brief would be to look for an easily repeatable (and easily modifiable*) logo/design that can be used in conjunction with the words Process Wire, rather than trying to replace them. A good solid logo without letters has a very long life span while remaining adaptable to changing trends and, indeed, the success of the brand. *Note: it should be modifiable in that it can work with different colours and in different contexts, while retaining a shape that is set in stone. This makes is multi-use from the outset which saves a lot of heart ache later. JS

On the images front, you can use something like this: <?php if($page->news_secondimage) { ?> <script type='text/javascript'> window.onload = (function(){ try{$("#thearticle > p:eq(2)").after("<a class='fancybox' rel='group' href='<?php echo $page->news_secondimage->url; ?>'><img class='pull-left siteimage' src='<?php echo $page->news_secondimage->getThumb('secondthumbnail'); ?>'></a>"); }catch(e){}}); </script> <?php } ?> Basically, I set up a second images field (news_secondimage) and then, checked if it was used and inserted it after the second paragraph of my main text which is in a div called #article It has struck me that you could go one step further and create another field that allows the user to select which paragraph - maybe limit their choice. That way it is inserted with exactly the right code, can have things like fancybox added (as I have here) and yet does not limit them to only one image. I disable the image button from TinyMCE of course! Joss

Just done a bit more reading on the Bootstrap menu and apparently this is because on touch screen you can have a hover flyout - so it must click to open the drop down. Not having a touch screen device, I am not up on this issue. Anyone have any more details?

Hi Martijn I have a very mixed opinion about any Wysiwyg editors - in an idea world I would probably have none, but I am aware that there needs to be some freedom too, and editors supply that. In bootstrap there are some very specific things that are not available unless you use styles. the "lead" style is one and a btn style is another (with what ever variations you want) Generally, the only one I bring out is the Lead style. The other styles I am talking about above are just odd layout things like H1-h6, paragraph line spacing and so on. These can be important, not because the user expects it to be identical, but because they should not be mislead as to the quantity of text - if on the front of the site you have a very open typography style, but in the back end it is very tight, it can be even more misleading. Having got that about right, when I use rich text editors, I often only use a couple of buttons - Bold and Italic, perhaps, or just one or two headings and a style. Basically, it is very, very specific to the use so that the user can see exactly what is expected purely by the lack of buttons around! Joss

Just thinking about using repeat fields for blocks with Bootstrap. The thing with blocks is that you may want to create a whole library of them - banners, bits of text, menus, news headlines, all kinds of things. So just doing straight repeat fields with, perhaps a WYSIWYG editor is limiting. Two other possibilities. You can uses a page field and Ryans clever select system where you grab the blocks then change the order. That works well if all your blocks are the same width (grid wise) and you have a fixed number. Alternatively you can create a repeat field with two fields, a page field set to import a single page and then a text field where you put in your span width (a number between 1 and 12) Edit: This is working horizontally, of course where you have blocks next to each other. If you do mess your maths up, then the blocks just get pushed underneath - looks messy, but does not break anything. TO be really, really cleaver you would have some scripting that does some adding up on the fly so you start with a maximum number of 12 and then that reduces each time you fill a field in - but the implications of that makes my head spin! This sounds like something that is better as a tutorial rather than as part of a profile. Joss

Hi Ryan, thanks for the feedback. Yes, I am still playing with it. I have to put a few more bits of bootstrap into the editor.css to make it play nicely in TinyMCE. I haven't done a repeater field here simply because it is only an example of what you can do and reflects one of the most common Boostrap examples - I sort of expect people to actually do their own thing and chuck out most of it. I will make a list of what I suggest people throw away! I have a version that I am using myself as a starter site that has a far more comprehensive system of blocks and modules that I might put up as a profile at some point. Though it will probably be too overdeveloped for most people, it may serve as an example of how you can work with blocks of information to really customise a site round an existing template structure. It also comes with a news system a gallery system and a few other bits and pieces. The menu issue is actually a limitation with the Bootstrap navigation system - parents only are place holders, so you have to plan out your pages a bit differently. I will put some of that in a readme, but people who have used Bootstrap before will see that coming.

Okay, I will look at that after Christmas - probably ought to learn about that myself! One thing I was thinking about is about the good or bad side of creating an image repository using hidden pages. Is that a good or bad idea? (I know it is possible, but not sure whether it is advisable) Also, With tiny MCE you can insert and image that is from another page. Is there any way of doing that with a normal field? For instance, you want a field where you are going to put a main image for the article, but rather than upload it, you want to choose it from an existing source. Apart from the odd gallery using repeaters or just an image field, I have haven't dug that far into that side yet. Joss

A pleasure - I will think of more to do over the Christmas period (once I have finished all the cooking required). If you have anything in particular you would like me to tackle, let me know. It is so early days on this stuff that it is difficult to work out what to do first! Joss

IMPORTANT This is now well and truly out of date! I strongly suggest ignoring it. The Bootwire System This is a series of proof-of-concept profiles based on ProcessWire 2.3 (forthcoming) and the Twitter Bootstrap Framework They are currently using Bootstrap 2.3 and JQuery 1.9.1 Bootwire Starter Profile Version 0.5 This version if for those who just want to leap in and get their hands dirty, It includes almost no content at all, very few fields and templates and very little markup. The normal Bootstrap navigation is in place for reference. More details are in the readme. Download Here: http://stonywebsites.co.uk/Bootwire-Starter-Profile.zip Github: https://github.com/jsanglier/Bootwire-Starter-Profile ============================================================ All versions come with a Site Settings page which is a child of a Content Management page in the page directory. This is used for common elements such as site title. The Starter Version has almost nothing in it! Some additional tweaks have been added to TinyMCE and these profiles are pre-loaded with the Modules Manager, the Profile Exporter and the Page Delete module. Please use the Module Manager to ensure all modules are up to date. NEW: Now with some demo functionality in a functions.inc file. Bootwire Demo Profile Built on the starter profile, this version demonstrates some Twitter Bootstrap functionality in the context of a ProcessWire installation. The Demo can be viewed here: http://bootwiredemo.stonywebsites.co.uk/ Download here: http://stonywebsites.co.uk/Bootwire-Demo-Profile.zip Github: https://github.com/jsanglier/bootwire/ Bootwire Admin Theme I have created an admin theme using Bootstrap 2.2.2. It is functioning but should be treated as a work in progress. However, you may like it. It has its own thread here. http://processwire.com/talk/topic/2640-bootwire-admin-proof-of-concept-admin-theme/ ============================================================== Future Profiles Bootwire Blog Profile This is intended to be a basic blog system using the Bootstrap framework. I am planning to start from scratch with the blog, basically because I need the exercise. It will not be as clever as Ryan's system, but it will have the following features (er ... possibly): Category Tree Tag System In-Article gallery Media pages Alternate themes for posts Lots of global settings Manual related posts Automated related posts (okay, probably beyond me) er ,,,, some other great feature that I have not thought of yet.
