  1. Thanks everybody. Without reference or some handle on it like you replied, a php newbie like me can take on quickly wrong assumptions in php usage.
  2. The link that Luis came up with (thanks for that) to that explanation part of php explains to me also the following I found inside head.inc 3 lines with a terminating semicolon at the end of each statement: <title><?php echo $page->get("headline|title"); ?></title> <meta name="description" content="<?php echo $page->summary; ?>" /> <meta name="generator" content="ProcssWire <?php echo $config->version; ?>" /> 3 lines without a terminating semicolon at the end of each statement: <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="<?php echo $config->urls->templates?>styles/ie.css" /> <script type="text/javascript" src="<?php echo $config->urls->templates?>scripts/jquery-1.4.2.min.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="<?php echo $config->urls->templates?>scripts/main.js"></script> The link above to php.net explains: The closing tag of a block of PHP code automatically implies a semicolon; you do not need to have a semicolon terminating the last line of a PHP block. Question for me remains why use a terminating semicolon at the end of each statement in the first 3 lines of code and not using it in the second 3 lines of code. Is it for personal or technical reasons ? Has it anything to do with that the first 3 lines of code is about title and meta name, and the second 3 lines of code about js and css ?
  3. Thanks for the quote and link.
  4. Hi On many places, like inside home.php, I see a starting php tag <?php but I don't see it's corresponding php end tag ?> Here's an example of a missing php end tag ?> inside the home.php when installing processwire <?php /** * Home template * */ include("./head.inc"); echo $page->body; include("./foot.inc"); Can anyone explain a php newbie why it seems to be ok to leave out the end tag ?> and still everything seems to work ?
  5. Good tip, thanks. Maybe somebody can reply on this.
  6. My hosting provider does not allow any Options in the .htaccess file. I have to remove following 3 lines in the Processwire htaccess file. Options -Indexes Options +FollowSymLinks # Options +SymLinksifOwnerMatch Does that have any consequences for the working of Processwire ?
  7. 90.000 botnet computers are used. One cloudprovider CloudFlare reported 60 million login attempts in a single hour. What is wrong with those people to start something up like that. It's on dutch on-line news. http://www.nu.nl/internet/3396975/botnet-probeert-massaal-in-loggen-wordpress-sites.html
  8. @ 3fingers. First of all, thanks for your feedback and your post writing about real life things in webdesign world. I've take a super quick look at the websites you've developed so far and I think you should consider to improve your front-end design skill. Let me explain before I get misunderstood, because there is absolutely no intention to be unpleasant here, really. Thanks for your feedback. I needed to read that. From my experience in this industry clients tends to prefer a good looking website ( ...without touching the topic of " what is beautiful for everyone"..) rather then a website that is coded extremely well, with all the best-practices that everyone of us need and prefer to follow/achieve. Of course a website needs to fit clients needs and expectations, and be solid and scalable at most. Yes the frontend needs to represent the look and "feel" of a clients business, service or product. You need to be creative with colors, fonts, shapes and layout and at the same time not losing the overall business look. Not an easy thing to make that combination shine on the frontend. Last link I suggest you to have a look : http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2011/09/28/youre-pricing-it-wrong-software-pricing-demystified/ Even if that article is focused on product-prices there are some insights that might be considered, IMHO. Your link to that pricing your product article is also an eye-opener. I have read it a couple of times. Finally a demystifying article and gives me a real good handle on pricing your product. Great find, thanks.
  9. Like Joss once said: you can also think of Processwire as a CME - content management engine. In other words, it does anything you want to the degree you understand how to extend on it.
  10. Hi arjen, thanks for your reply but that still doesn't give me any clue or guideline or reference when it comes to how much euros or dollars to charge for what you have delivered the client. Seems that most people don't like to talk about that for private or competition reasons. I can understand that. Also It isn't that easy to find on the net but after an hour googling I found some hard figures that at least gives me a reference: http://website-creations.co.uk/index.html http://cmsteachings.com/how-much-charge-joomla-website http://netmatters.co.nz/index.php/seo http://www.joedolson.com/pricing.php
  11. I know this can be a personal question as each has it's own skills and hour rate and so I will not ask you personally about it, but where can I find more info about prices for making a website ? 1) pages with just text 2) pages with text and pictures 3) pages with text - pictures and animations 4) pages with picture slideshows / presentations 5) pages with flash 6) pages with movies 7) pages with a guestbook 8) responsive pages 9) the number of pages Are they all treated the same in one project when charging for building a website or do they count to the price ? When a website is finished and delivered, how much to charge for afterwards editing pages ? Per hour or page ? And should the client pay before or after you edited his pages ? What about hosting. Is affiliated hosting a good idea ? I googled a lot but it is not easy to find how a single website designer or company is calculating a price and what is considered to be standard prices/rates.
  12. Dr. Joseph Murphy wrote about the same concepts in easy to read words, but somehow he is not so known as the others.
  13. @ arjen Get away from the computer. Haven't talked with those kind of guys before. But you're right an intake conversation with such a guy will make it more real for me. Though I think that I need to learn and practise PW's api, and come up with a decent portfolio first, before that.
  14. @ NooseLadder Just some more ideas to think about I hope it helps? It sure does. What you posted there, are not just standalone tips, but actually a strategy - a way of working to keep things going during or after a project. Thanks for making me see that bigger picture.
  15. @ arjen Let's say the accountant costs me $400 (really simple administration) a year, but my wrong tax administration costs me $800 a year. The bottomline is that I've just earned $400 a year. 400 dollar per year, that would be ok. I didn't have any clue what an accountant costs per year, but 400 dollar per year sounds ok for me to handle. Thanks for the docracy link.
  16. That's how I see it too Ryan. In contrast with the local economies, (unemployment here is 35 %) I see the Internet economy year after year growing. That makes investing in your self and in PW for a growing number of people no longer a hobby but a serious thing. Thanks for those links. I can add Dr. Joseph Murphy to it.
  17. @ arjen 1) Find a good professional accountant 2) Find a good professional lawyer 3) These guys will save you money in the long run. I guess you are right but wow that sounds serious to me and holds me away. Isn't that for big dollar websites because those guys have an expensive hour rate don't they ?
  18. This question falls through my mind right now. If you are going to make a website for a client, how do you cash the money ? How do you prepare your self when a client is not or is not going to pay all the money you agreed upon ? I spoke with a german who made and exploits the following website: http://www.comprendes.de One way he wins money from his website is by advertisements like from transport companies, t-shirts, local german zipf bakery, etc. It is in german, but it's an interesting website by the way. That german said he always cashes the money for making a website upfront. If the client does not agree on paying everything upfront, then he cashes the money in 2 or 3 parts. The first part at the beginning of making the website and the last part when the website is finished. He keeps all the admin login data, such as ftp, frontpanel, emailaddresses, domainregistration, etc. until he has been paid the last part of the money, and then gives the client all the admin data. What do you guys think about this ?
  19. @ alanfluff if you are going to be billing anyone then be you@yourdomain rather than you@hotmail.com and using a professional (entry level cost) invoicing system such as FreshBooks; @ jmart If you aren't a designer, don't post work on your own crappy design. Use a professional theme and focus on your development and integration skills. checking on elance and Odesk. @ marty https://www.youtube.com/user/JamesVictore/videos @ willyc (from dropship) I find suppliers who warehouse and ship high margin products "blind" which means it has my company label on it.. Then I market the products on my own niche websites. Every time someone places on order on my sites, the supplier ships it to the customer for me. For example.. I'll sell a TV for $999 and the supplier will charge me $450. So I make $549 profit without any work besides running the website. This is going to keep me behind my laptop for the rest of the week. I sure have some time to spend on it now. Somebody once said: You have to approach what is (my job loss) through a different advantage point. Well this forum with you guys gave me some advantage points to start working on the internet. Thanks for all the tips and advice.
  20. Same here but gave up on revo and discovered PW as evo on turbo. Yes, Mary, alias einsteinboi posted here before in the forum. She has posted a whole lot of tutorials on the internet and always brings the best of it for beginners to start with. I have to give her credit for helping a lot of beginners, like me, into Modx Evo at the time. http://codingpad.maryspad.com/ http://codingpad.maryspad.com/category/modx/ http://codingpad.maryspad.com/category/drupal/
  21. Thanks NooseLadder, for that inspiring post and video link. Are you doing your affiliate marketing in the Life Insurance market with only one website ? I will pm you more about it. Since I am 15 years in computer repair and service I have a lot to affiliate that could be bought by home and office computer users. I think I will try that first.
  22. Hi OllieMackJames. Thanks for your extended post. You gave me some real good examples there and also good guiding points. Yes I also think that contacting existing websites to hire or improve things would work. It would also bring me in contact with more people on the internet and out of that sooner or later a project.
  23. Hi onjegolders. What character I do have ? We'll if you mean related to computer work I can work behind a computer all day long and don't get bored, don't get a head ache or red eyes. What part of the web do I like the most? We'll in the stage I am right now I don't want to categorize my self but I want to make a start and evolve into the web. That could be making more websites. Here are two websites I made: http://www.zundappks125.com http://www.kanarenspanndecken.com/ But it could also be other things like affiliating, google adwords/adsense, selling my own products on my own website, blogging, writing ebooks on amazon, etc. etc. About my skills ? Are you offering me a job ? We'll I repair/service 15 years computers / ran my own internet cafe for 3 years / speak and write 4 languages and know css - html - js. At the moment I am learning to it PW's api. Uhm - didn't expect to write so much about my self here. Yes, I would like freelancing as well. You read so much about people these days bringing there own device (byod) who are working in shared public offices with internet all over the place.
  24. Hi Soma, I wasn't sure about that so I thought it would be ok to post in "Getting started" as this is very much my case now. I forgot to mention that about a year ago I made 200 euros with translating a simple 9 page website to english. That was my first money I made with the internet. But like I said I am at home now and can be on the net with PW 24/7 so would love to hear how you people are doing it. And I am sure that would benefit more people.
  25. We'll I see it that, if one door closes, another door opens. Almost every month I read that business and services on the internet are growing and more people are buying over the internet so there must be a lot of possibilities there.
