Hi everyone,
I created a new version of this language pack for supporting ProcessWire 3.x : https://gitlab.com/vmaillard/pw_3.x_lang_fr
Since the GitHub repository was last updated in December 2016, I don't know exactly what to do with my version. Should I create a new module in the Language Packs directory? There could be the "French Language Pack (fr-FR)" and the "French Language Pack (fr-FR) for ProcessWire 3.x".

Thanks for your response, Andreas. I forked the repository on Github but actually it is archived and in read-only mode. I can't add a pull request.
I will wait to see if Pierre-Luc come here, or maybe contact him by PM.

I didn't saw, that this repository is archived. Also @Pierre-Luc was last active in this board in 2016, so maybe a PM would help. If he doesn't reply for a long time, maybe a separate language pack or asking a board admin to replace the current one would be the only possibility. Good luck. ?

Hi all,

i'm currently working on a full translation of pw admin in French, slowly but surely, to be used in pw 3.0.184

two and a half main steps
- first, as advised in pw translation tool, deleting all unused phrases, checked ?
- and now, progressively, translate the phrases that are empty, well, most of them...
- in the meantime, i add the files in the "no translation files exist" list, beginning with, to my mind, the most useful ones, the fields that have changed so much they are not translated anymore, files, images, datetime...

both those last two steps in slow progress but in progress anyway

in case it could be useful for anyone other than my non english speaking clients ? i update the zip file frequently here https://github.com/virtualgadjo/pw30184-lang-fr

a little update

• no more unused strings/sentences: done
• no more empty strings/sentences: done
• a few lost translations (gone to the no translation file exists list, not in the middle of the ocean) back, images, files, datetime, toggle: done

i will continue creating those missing translation files to end with a fully translated admin, it will probably take a few days but even now the admin is really close to being frenchies friendly

here we are, the translation is now complete, yes, i know i said yesterday "in a few days" but i forgot the kind of crazy guy i am ?

• no more abandoned/unused string/phase
• no more empty string/phrase
• no more files in the "no translation file exists" list which means some never translated files are now... translated ? and those that were translated but didn't exist anymore for completely revamped modules/filetypes are now translated again

First of all, sorry for the very late reply. I have let too much time pass without maintaining the French language pack. I am starting to use Processwire again for projects so I'll try to catch up.

I'd be happy to integrate your work into the GitHub repository but you haven't made a pull request. Can you make one? Ideally, you don't want to go through a .zip, but keep the .json files so that versioning can be done.

Or if you prefer, I can commit your work by tagging you. I will also update the readme to credit you.

Once that's done, we can continue the translation work on the new versions.

very honoured that my little translations may have any interest ?
actually, i don't really know how to do what you're talking about but i'll have a look at it

just a little detail, you may have seen that i keep a different repo for each pw master release because i've conviced a few french friend to use pw and depending of the version updating the files may lose some older texts

actually as i keep translating release by release i've even considered making a different repo by dev release or creating a new repo with all the translations in zips named after the release
this explains why the zips with the fact it's also the easiest way to update a language translation, uploading a zip that pw will unzip server side and boum everything is up to date ?

just tell me what would be the best way for you to use my repos (one called last master release with the json files? and keeping the others for my friends using older releases for example)

Hello Chris,

I found this video (in french) that explains how to do a pull request: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5xYWy6zJGY. The advantage is that you can have your own repository and I can easily integrate your commits. The drawback is that if you're not used to it, it may not be practical to use. Especially if I also make commits on my side or integrate other pull requests because you'll have to keep your fork up to date (https://docs.github.com/en/pull-requests/collaborating-with-pull-requests/working-with-forks/syncing-a-fork).

If it's too complicated, I can do as I wrote above: integrate your work through a commit by tagging you. But I also thought of another solution: I can add you as a collaborator to the Github repository so that you can contribute directly.

I understand what you have set up with the different repositories for the different versions of Processwire. But I think it's better to use the tags and releases to do it. For example, on the current repo, it is possible to download .zip files of old tags: https://github.com/v-maillard/pw-lang-fr/tags and install them directly by the admin. If you want to provide zips to your friends, it would be easier to use tags.

To sum up: in my opinion, the best solution is pull requests (you can make pull requests from your repo fork). But if it's too complicated, the simplest solution is to add you as a collaborator (you'll have direct access to the repo). In any case, you'll have to work with .json files and we'll use tags to archive the versions in .zip. What solution do you prefer?

sorry to be a bit long to answer...
as soon as i can get some time to have a try at this pull request thing, i'll do it (currently working on a complicated website, with pw of course :))
the thing is i like to test things before making big mistakes that don't only impact... me and as much as i like playing with git, having always been working alone, i have never used those collaborative functions except for, looong ago, with the old svn ?

in the meantime, don't hesitate to do exactly what you want with my repos, they are here to be useful without any need for me to be tagged, quoted and so on ?

I understand your point of view completely. In the next few days, I will manually integrate your work (by tagging you because I think it's normal). I'll keep you posted, especially if I make any changes later.

If you're interested, I'm thinking of listing some revisions and general rules that we could implement for the translation. I'll need to go back over the details and make suggestions.

As a new master release will soon be released, don't forget to check the dev branch of the french repo : https://github.com/v-maillard/pw-lang-fr/compare/master...v-maillard:pw-lang-fr:dev?diff=split. I already translated for the 3.0.217's version of ProcessWire. So, if you start translating, you'll need to download this dev .zip (

you know, i download and translate every dev release the very day they appear on the website, i'm completely up to date up to the 3.0.224, i think that as soon as the next  master release is on air, i won't be long to complete the translation and upload it to github,, of course i'll let you know with a little post here

to be honest, i'm even already building a website for a french music school with the last dev release, it will be easy to upgrade with the coming master release ?

I've just discovered ProcessWire, already understood quite a few things to the point of attacking the mulit-language because what I've been doing for a few weeks is starting to look good but, loading a zip in French from vincent, I just got a nice error.

Did I get the wrong fields when I uploaded it to the administration?

Was the translation outdated?

Was there a bug or a mistake somewhere?

Right now, I'm going to grab https://github.com/virtualgadjo/pw-30229-lang-fr, which you mentioned just before I intervened, and try to install it.

Can you tell me what to do when we're in a situation like this, and can you give me a link to a tutorial that explains how to install languages?

I'm a mega-beginner but I understand well when it's well explained ?

It seems you tried to upload the zip file of the github repository instead of the one within it with the translations (one can see this because of the repository’s README.md file in the error).

First unzip “pw-30229-lang-fr-main.zip” and then upload ”pw_3.0.229_fr.zip” in ProcessWire.

I finally zipped the files in the directory to be safe, sent them, and if there were no errors this time, the four languages appear in the frontend menu but clicking on the French tab gives me English while the others work with their respective languages.

From time to time, during manipulations, the name labels of the frontend menu change by themselves and you have to rewrite them.

More annoying, still on the frontend, the URLs for German and Finnish are in ../DE/ and../FI/ but English and French are directly pared to the NDD.

Which I think is normal for English because it is in the Default language and it seems that there is a hiccup at this level.

By the way, how do I set French to Default ?
