[not PW related] My static client site suddenly does not load, neither with or without www.

I just got a call from a client of mine. He has simple needs, therefore, a simple static site that I have hosted with Nearly Free Speech.

GoDaddy is the registrar. I would have preferred switching it over to NameCheap, but he's happy where it's at.

Today he calls me and states that he can not access the site with www in front. I try, and fail as well. I enter the site name without www and still can not access it.

WHAT CAN I ACCESS?

Time Warner Cable is our ISP. My client and I live in the same city, thus the same crappy over-charging ISP.

Any and all attempts to enter the site name results in a search results page. My clients website is listed as number one.

For now, this seems to be the ONLY way I can access the site, my clicking the first returned result.

We used to be very proud that he was getting plenty of calls for his services. Several leads per week. Now he's getting NONE :(

Here is the site name.

elpasoprint.net

www.elpasoprint.net

http://elpasoprint.net

http://www.elpasoprint.net

Please try with the www and without.

I can access it without www. With 'www', Google reports:

The server at www.elpasoprint.net can't be found because the DNS look-up failed. DNS is the network service that translates a website's name to its Internet address. This error is most often caused by having no connection to the Internet or a misconfigured network. It can also be caused by an unresponsive DNS server or a firewall preventing Google Chromefrom accessing the network.

I suppose you need to talk to GoDaddy? MInd you, my knowledge about servers is very minimal :-)

Edit

I am assuming you used to be able to reach it via www.? If you've never, then you'll need to set it up in your DNS A Record. But you probably know this already...  ;)

UGH!

I've hated GoDaddy for many years and refuse to do any business with them. They always seemed to mess things up for me.

See my edit above as well if it helps..

Yes, saw that :)

It just started happening, not sure at all, how long it's been happening for.

The last time I visited his site was months ago.

I have not had to change any thing. It looks like I will be switching to NameCheap as soon as possible. But my client is a bit of a ... disorganizedfellow. He never was able to find his GoDaddy email on setting up the domain. The only reason we currently even have it pointed at the right host is because I was able to finally talk to a GoDaddy rep with enough brain cells. Took me about an hour on the phone with them yahoos.

None of them works for me, but clearly the bare domain is redirecting to www. Do you have the NFS DNS? Have a read at their faq https://faq.nearlyfreespeech.net/section/domainnameservice/baredomain#baredomain

At first I wanted to edit the htaccess to force the www, because my client wants it that way.

But then after checking the link you shared and reading a few other pages, I decided to change the canonical name.

Previously it was elpasoprint.net. Now I added the www to it.

it appears to be working. I supposed it'll take a few hours to resolve DNS issues?!

Would you mind testing it for me from your end of the webs? :)

You need to get with the provider that's doing your DNS which currently shows as Nearlyfreespeech.  Here is an extract from a WHOIS inquiry:

Domain Name: ELPASOPRINT.NET
Registrar: GODADDY.COM, LLC
Sponsoring Registrar IANA ID: 146
Whois Server: whois.godaddy.com
Referral URL: http://registrar.godaddy.com
Name Server: NS.PHX2.NEARLYFREESPEECH.NET
Name Server: NS.PHX8.NEARLYFREESPEECH.NET
Status: clientDeleteProhibited http://www.icann.org/epp#clientDeleteProhibited
Status: clientRenewProhibited http://www.icann.org/epp#clientRenewProhibited
Status: clientTransferProhibited http://www.icann.org/epp#clientTransferProhibited
Status: clientUpdateProhibited http://www.icann.org/epp#clientUpdateProhibited
Updated Date: 16-jun-2015
Creation Date: 11-jan-2013
Expiration Date: 11-jan-2016

I don't know if you have made a recent DNS change.  If you have, it takes up to 72 hours for the change to properly propagate throughout the Internet.

I've made absolutely NO changes to the DNS, untill today. TO get it to resolve properly.

But that's the weird thing man. It was working fine for a long time, then this started happening.

Well.

It appears to be back up. I hand-typed it in my bar and it comes up as expected. both with and without www.

Can someone else check for me?

Shouldn't both work (i.e. with and without www) if you set up you A Records accordingly? That's what I do with mine at namecheap, according to their KB, i.e.

Type                Host         Value

A record           @             11.22.33.44 (your IP)

A record           www          11.22.33.44 (same IP)

No messing about with .htaccess and whatever the user types will get them there.

Unless of course the client always wants his/her visitors to see 'www' :-)

I run this command

curl -I http://www.elpasoprint

and I get this output

HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Date: Mon, 09 Nov 2015 21:11:03 GMT
Server: Apache
Content-Type: text/html; charset=UTF-8
Via: 1.1 edge4.phxe.nearlyfreespeech.net (squid)
Connection: keep-alive

And without www

curl -I http://elpasoprint.net
HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Date: Mon, 09 Nov 2015 21:11:12 GMT
Server: Apache
Content-Type: text/html; charset=UTF-8
Via: 1.1 vhost.phx6.nearlyfreespeech.net:3128 (squid/2.7.STABLE7)

The part where it says vhost... I am guessing that means it's virtualhost is pointing to www.elpasoprint.net
