Is it possible to build a site like this in PW and if so how would you start?

I have an idea for a site where users could post a service that they offer and other users could connect with them. One example site is Freelancify which was built with RoR.

Is it possible to create something like this in PW and if so how could I get started?

Or am I as a php newbie over my head and really am looking at creating a custom PHP or RoR based CMS?

To answer your question you should write down what your site should be able to do. You then got the functionality. After that also think of data structures, routing etc.

Then compare that to what PW offers 'out of the box', and keep in mind it's intended use. Now you know the areas where you need to do your own coding. Let's say you want to mimic the features described here http://www.freelancify.com/features, imo you are looking at a good deal of custom coding.

I think this can be done in PW but in this case it might be worth considering building something from scratch based on the back of one of the modern PHP frameworks out there.

Reminds me of that project I read about on KickStarter and the project was banned for collecting funds for this guy to start his own KickStarter site
