Changing order of existing productvariants

I have existing variants but would like to change the order. I know I can change it myself in the front-end but I would prefer it for some variants to be changed in the back-end. Is this possible from within the shop (regenerating variants does not help)?

Currently, it is not possible.

Could you please explain the specific use case? E.g., Why do you need to change the order? Is it something you'd like the editor to be able to do? Will you have one criteria for the change? I am asking to see if you could at least do this using a hook.

Thanks for your fast reply.

I can imagine it would be nice for the shopowner to be able to change the order from within the editor. For example when he wants a variant to be in front of the others regardless of sorting from my end. I don't think it's a must however.
