bhalsey Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Hi...super super beginner here. I have FileZilla that I am using for the ftp, I got the zip version of processwire, but now am kind of confused as to what to do next. I tried to transfer all the files, and all made it over except the /install.php and /index.php. It says this: Status: Starting download of /index.php Error: Failed to open "/index.php" for writing Error: File transfer failed Status: Starting download of /index.php Error: Failed to open "/index.php" for writing Error: File transfer failed Am I doing this the right way at all? I'm so confused.... trying to build my first website but the process is slow and difficult and I'm not even sure how to install this cms. Thanks! Bethanie
diogo Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Welcome Bethanie! I'm on mobile and in a hurry to leave, but I'm sure that when I come back in the evening you will have already an entire course on ftp from the guys here in the forum 1
teppo Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Judging from your error message it would seem that there's already an existing index.php where you're uploading ProcessWire, am I right? If that's the case, you should either clean old files (unless you've already got a working site you wish to use until your PW site is finished, that is) before uploading or create a new folder and upload and install ProcessWire there instead. If you install ProcessWire in a folder and later move it to the root folder of your site, you will need to fix any existing links, though. That's not very difficult and has already been discussed here in detail, but if possible it would be preferable to install PW directly where it's going to be located at in the future.
bhalsey Posted January 20, 2013 Author Posted January 20, 2013 Thanks for the reply. I checked the file manager for my site and found that there is existing index.php and install.php files. They should be new, since I just downloaded all this yesterday. I don't know where to go next, though. Shouldn't those files be doing something? How do I make them work to start building my website? Are these dumb questions? Hope I'm making sense. Thanks, Bethanie
Pete Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Hi Bethanie Next you will need to go to yoursite.com/index.php in a web browser to start the installation process. You will also need to have created a mySQL database through your web host's control panel.
bhalsey Posted January 23, 2013 Author Posted January 23, 2013 Thanks guys for all the support! I really appreciate it - got things figured out now! 2
