Get size info from slider

How does this image slider (see uploaded picture) work? How can I get its value? Any value I set, I still get the same $image->width value. What am I doing wrong?

The slider does not change the image size.
The slider is only used to scale the size of the preview in the admin area.

if you click on the picture, you can select the edit function. Then you can resize the Image (and save the resized image)
