Character counter and max char settings - both not working?

Hi,

I'm wondering if there's something I'm missing:
I've acticvated both the char counter as well as setting a max length value on a textfield which uses TinyMCE (on the input tab of the field's settings).
Using the defaul admin theme or uikit the counter just won't update while typing - or at all for that matter, also the max setting does nothing.

Is there something else that needs to be done for this to work?
I've checked for JS errors (nothing) and also if jQuery is loaded/active (it is), so I'm kind of stumped - especially since searching the forum didn't result in anyone else having that problem..

Would be greatful for any hints to solve this!
