Working with data from an external database in forms within PW

I need to extract data from another DB outside PW and present it streamlined (sorted based on custom search input) in forms.

I know SQL and all that but pls suggest what steps to consider in tackling this efficiently in the PW environment as I am still new to PW.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "present it streamlined in forms", but I think the gist of your request is about getting some data into ProcessWire in order to sort/display it based on a search/filter.

The CMS Critic case study post has some great examples of importing from a WordPress site using the ProcessWire API, so it'd be a great example to look at to see how it's done. Once the data is in the site as pages, you are good to go.
