  1. Hi I am thinking about offering a web development services in my country. I have many questions and I don't know where to ask but I think you guys could help me a lot. I want to offer simple websites that are easy to do in PW. Some simple websites for businesses, services, local businesses and so on. No e-shops, apps or too complicated stuff... When I look at websites that offer web development services, to me they clearly suck. I made some Google searches ... I can make a list of things that I could do better than them in my online presentation... some websites look like from 2002. Really horrible IMO... However, I still don't say it is going to be easy. I am good at HTML, CSS, SCSS, Foundation 5 - so designing a template is not a problem. I have not fully learned JS and jQuery, but have gone through them in CodeCadamy along with PHP, Ruby, Python ... so I have almost completed CodeCadamy. Foundation 5 offers many plugins that I am comfortable using, so I am not sure how much of JS/jQ do I need ... And also I still need to get comfortable with PW since I have not really even tried it. So here are my questions... 1. What coding knowledge should I make sure I have before starting? 2. I am a high school student do you think it is manageable to do about 2 simple projects a month? 3. What about webhosting? Should I get some kind of reseller hosting? Which is the best one? Mediatemple looks good to me. Many big brands use their hosting, so I figured it could be more high-end and reliable solution. 4. How would you recommend getting first clients? 5. Where can I learn more about communicating with clients, what question to ask, what to be careful about and so on? 6. What should I charge for simple website ? Some static pages, custom responsive design, contact form, Google maps, maybe a simple blog, CMS access 7. Any other tip that you think could be helpful? Thanks, Marek
  2. I don't know if PHP is wrong or something ... note that i am not a web developer or programmer ... i am just trying to learn some basics in codecadamy right now and then decide which direction to go ... nodeJS is cool right now and has got some benefits like it outperforms PHP in speed ... at the same time I like PW, so i wonder what to focus on in the future.
  3. I am learning web development, and from research (like browsing and asking questions on quora) of languages that i could learn, it seems that JS is a best choice. It can be used for front end and back end too with nodeJS. second best choice for me would be python or ruby on rails. It seems that there is no reason to go with old school PHP. Yet CMSs like PW or WP are all coded in PHP. Why is that? why newer technologies are not used? NodeJS is very fast , wouldn't it work great if something like PW would be coded in nodeJS?
  4. Hi, I am thinking about starting a business as a web developer in my country. Right now i have knowledge of HTML, CSS and SASS... i have been playing around with webdesign for past year ... and I am also working on a product to sell... but after it is completed I would like to learn some programming so I could offer making websites for clients (mainly web presentations for small and medium businesses ... at least at the begging) I also want to offer all services around from custom webdesign to web hosting. I was thinking about CMS i could offer to clients. I have played around with Impress pages and it seems good for client needs really just simple stuff on their website like contact form, some photos, address, and some basic info... it has got nice drag and drop interface ... really simple ... For something more complicated i could use PW since it seems to me really promising, although i don't know why ... i don't even now how to use it .. but i feel like it is something similar to the new perfect CMS that i thought up yesterday late at night in my head However, my coding knowledge is not on the level of making my own cms so i am thinking about learning some PHP, JS at codeacademy.com and then learning processwire. So at first i would like to ask you if you think i am on the right track. ... and what knowledge do i need to use PW? how much time can it take to learn for example PHP and JS at codeacademy? I would also appreciate some tips on web dev business, working with clients, or some tips on books related to this, Thank You!
