Global field with one instance needed: Content of footer should be dynamic and changes should affect all pages at once

Recommended Posts

Hi community, thanks for the great work you do šŸ™‚

IĀ“m looking for a global field which can be used in the footer and has only one instance for all pages. So IĀ“m kind of looking for "One field to rule them all".
Ā

Reason for my question: The website IĀ“m currently building has one footer for all pages. The content of the footer should be dynamic - therefore I made a global field which is automatically inserted into each page.
Problem: if I want to change something in the footer, I have to do it for all fields, because each field has itĀ“s own instance.

Question: is it possible to have one global field in which changes the content for the footer of all pages?

In most CMS Systems a simple solution to this is often impossible, I hope that processwire is different šŸ™‚

All the best,
Daniel

Hi Daniel!Ā

It sure is. A simple way to do it is to have the field on only ONE page, like the homepage or a "settings" page and get this page's field content in your footer template.Ā

For instance, if you have this field on your homepage, called "footer_text", you can get it this way:

// On your footer.php file

//Get the homepage reference
$homepage = $pages->get('/');

// Let's say your field is called "footer_text"
echo $homepage->footer_text;

// Docs: https://processwire.com/api/ref/pages/get/

@daniel_puehringerĀ as Sergio already mentioned, I have a common practice to create a page I call "Settings" which I do not publish or allow for search results to list.

In that page I generally attach any fields that I consider global for the entire website (phone numbers, address, emails etc.) For the Settings page to work, I am creating a template without an actual file which I also call Settings to allow me to faster orient what is what and assign it to the Settings page.

It works a bit like WordPress or any other platform where you have a main Theme Admin which is basically used for global configuration. Should you prefer to make the config page more user-friendly, feel free to separate the configuration to tabs (e.g. Home, Contact US, About us etc.) in which you would attach fields that are specific to that page.

The beauty of ProcessWire (and its force of course) is that it allows you super easily and quickly to organize every aspect in one way or another that you see fit best for the purpose.

      Hi, Everyone!Ā
      I'm currently working on a page reference field and set it for multiple pages (AsmSelect) for the input. Is there a way for me to add an image field (aka Avatar) and the title of page in the radio button?Ā
      I used the field name enclosed in the { }. Didn't work. It appeared a text instead.Ā
      Thanks in advance and hope to hear from you soon!

      Hello dear PW gurus.

      I have stumbled over a strange error that i all of sudden got when trying to upload an image to a images field on a page.
      There where images allready stored in the field that i wanted to keep, but during the upload the error apear and after that all images are gone from the field and i canĀ“t upload any, i just get the error every time.
      I am running ProcessWire 3.0.153 dev.
      Update:
      After looking in the assets folder i find the folder for the page and the image files seems to be there including the ones i tried to upload when the error occured.
      But they donĀ“t show up in the images field in the page editor.
      Ā
      The error reported:
      Ā
      SQLSTATE[01000]: Warning: 1265 Data truncated for column 'ratio' at row 1 And here is a screenshot of the event:

      The TracyDebugger Error reporting:

      I hope you fine folks could point me in a direction.
      But it seems our old pal set_time_limit() is back.

      Regards, EyeDentify

      Hey all, hope you're feeling well these days!
      Short question: Under "Setup > Templates" it's possible to sort the templates by last modified. Is this possible for fields view to?
      Long explanation:
      Currently I am in the process of programming a reusable template and often have to copy several fields & templates from different PW installations into my "master version".
      Therefore it would be good to see already in the field list when the last modification has taken place.
      Stay healthy & don't forget to wash you hands - many greets!

      This module is inspired by and similar to the Template Stubs module. The author of that module has not been active in the PW community for several years now and parts of the code for that module didn't make sense to me, so I decided to create my own module. Auto Template Stubs has only been tested withĀ PhpStorm because that is the IDE that I use.
      Auto Template Stubs
      Automatically creates stub files for templates when fields or fieldgroups are saved.
      Stub files are useful if you are using an IDE (e.g. PhpStorm) that provides code assistance - the stub files let the IDE know what fields exist in each template and what data type each field returns. Depending on your IDE's features you get benefits such as code completion for field names as you type, type inference, inspection, documentation, etc.
      Installation
      InstallĀ the Auto Template Stubs module.
      Configuration
      You can change the class name prefix setting in the module config if you like. It's good to use a class name prefix because it reduces the chance that the class name will clash with an existing class name.
      The directory path used to store the stub files is configurable.
      There is a checkbox to manually trigger the regeneration of all stub files if needed.
      Usage
      Add a line near the top of each of your template files to tell your IDE what stub class name to associate with theĀ $pageĀ variable within the template file. For example, with the default class name prefix you would add the following line at the top of theĀ home.phpĀ template file:
      /** @var tpl_home $page */ Now enjoy code completion, etc, in your IDE.

      Adding data types for non-core Fieldtype modules
      The module includes the data types returned by all the core Fieldtype modules. If you want to add data types returned by one or more non-core Fieldtype modules then you can hook theĀ AutoTemplateStubs::getReturnTypes()Ā method. For example, inĀ /site/ready.php:
      // Add data types for some non-core Fieldtype modules $wire->addHookAfter('AutoTemplateStubs::getReturnTypes', function(HookEvent $event) { $extra_types = [ 'FieldtypeDecimal' => 'string', 'FieldtypeLeafletMapMarker' => 'LeafletMapMarker', 'FieldtypeRepeaterMatrix' => 'RepeaterMatrixPageArray', 'FieldtypeTable' => 'TableRows', ]; $event->return = $event->return + $extra_types; }); Credits
      Inspired by and much credit to theĀ Template StubsĀ module by mindplay.dk.

      Hi,Ā
      I'm using this kind of setup (https://processwire.com/blog/posts/language-access-control-and-more-special-permissions/#language-page-edit-permissions) in order to control the page edit permissions.Ā Now I'm wondering if it's possible to hide the "none-ediable" language-tabs instead of striking them through.

      Many greets...
