Noob - Quickest way to create a site like the demo?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm brand new to ProcessWire and I found it when searching for a CMS to create my web site.

The reason I'm interested is because I want to create a site which is exactly like the Skyscrapers demo site, but with different content obviously.  I like how the site is formatted and the search options box, the summary list and detail pages, and the map.

What is the quickest and easiest way of setting up a page like this with my own variables, enter my own records and have it formatted just like that demo page with the menu options, sorting and search options?  I've had a look at the Tutorials page, but I can't see anything this specific.

Thanks for your time & help!

You can download the source code for the old skyscrapers demo

https://github.com/ryancramerdesign/SkyscrapersProfile

Then extract site folder beside wire/ and other site profiles. Then perform setup and check out templates, fields, how PW works. Once you get the hang of it, replace the templates with modern v2 version.

If you have any questions, ask away

Hi Abdus,

Awesome, thanks for the fast and detailed reply.

I hope it's as easy as it looks to set up such a cool site.

I've tried this with WordPress and I'm so frustrated.

You shouldn't have offered to answer all my questions!! ;)  I'll be back!!! :D

Thanks again!!

@ComputerKid the SkyScraper profile is what several persons (including me) used to disect the code and find out about the power of PW Api. Please, do yourself a favor and do not just install the profile, but have a look "under the hood" and try to assimilate what, how, why etc. I can guarantee you that quite soon you will realize that Wordpress has also nothing comon other than being developed under PHP ;) I worked myself on Wordpress for quite a few users (as an end user) and was not even able to edit some scripting parts to add custom fields etc. Now with PW in zero time I started developing my own theme with quite extensive functionality. And there is so much more to improve my coding skills, so just search the forum, search in google for ProcessWire and you will be more than good to add what is needed to your website ;)

Hi, there should also be a site profile in the directory called "blue vr" or alike. This is inspiring too.

Although the PW backend is really intuitive, ever so often my clients need some assistance. Be it they are not so tech savvy or they are not working in the backend often.
For those cases it is nice to make some help videos available to editors. This is what this module does.
      ProcessHelpVideos Module
A Process module to display help videos for the ProcessWire CMS. It can be used to make help videos (screencasts) available to content editors.
This module adds a 'Help Videos" section to the ProcessWire backend. The help videos are accessible through an automatically created page in the Admin page tree. You can add your help videos as pages in the page tree. The module adds a hidden page to the page tree that acts as parent page for the help video pages. All necessary fields and templates will be installed automatically. If there are already a CKEditor field and/or a file field for mp4 files installed in the system, the module will use those. Otherwise it will create the necessary fields. Also the necessary templates for the parent help videos page and it's children are created on module install. The module installs a permission process-helpvideos. Every user role that should have access to the help video section, needs this permission. I use the help video approach on quite a few production sites. It is stable so far and well received by site owners/editors. Up until now I installed required fields, templates and pages manually and then added the module. Now I added all this logic to the install method of the module and it should be ready to share.
The module and further description on how to use it is available on github: https://github.com/gebeer/ProcessHelpVideos
If you like to give it a try, I am happy to receive your comments/suggestions here.

      Hi all,
I have been asked by a client whether we can setup load balancing for their existing Processwire site.
From my investigations on Google and within these forums, it definitely seems possible but as a newbie with a basic understanding of the subject im a bit lost.
Does anyone know of any existing tutorials for settings up load balancing with PW?
What items would need to be changed on their current stand alone install, is there a list of best practices worth consulting etc?
As I understand it we would need to have some sort of copying mechanism (rsync script most likely) in order to make sure any uploaded assets are shared between the main server and the fallback ones, other than that im not sure what else would need to be ammended.
Any thoughts/help would be greatly appreciated.

      EDIT:
What I'm actually really looking for is a way to edit and add children of a page in a similar way as RepeaterMatrix fields:
Easy to add new ones and easy to move, hide and modify inline:

      ––––
I have a problem and am so close to a solution, but everything i've found so far only gets me about 95% and before I create something on my own want to ask is anyone knows a soltion or if I miss something.
My simple requirement: Editing Children and creating new ones inside the current parent page context – eighter inline or in a Lightbox.

      Not working Option A:
With page relation fields I can create new pages – but it requires me to select a fixed parent. If I don't provide a parent, no new link is present.

      Not working Option B:
With the awesome AdminPageFieldEditLinks Module I can create new Pages directly without the need to provide a parant beforehand – but then I need to select it at runtime.

There is a new link now – the link is: parent_id=0&template_id=51&modal=1 … if it only provided the correct parent_id!!!

But now i have to select the parent:

      Not working Option C :
That's what I do right now… Reordering the Child-Field to the first tab – but to maintain the context, I would need the edit and new button to open a lightbox instead of a page reload.

      Possible solutions:
For A+B: If I could provide a selector as parent, this would solve my issue: "parent=page.id" or a checkbox "use parent page for new pages". Or I could use some hook?
For C : I could write my own javascript to open the links in a Lightbox.
