Here is a fieldtype that creates a drop down list of the US States from which to select.  Hope it is of use to someone!

Let me know if you experience any issues with it.

Note: I was considering extending the last plugin I created (FieldtypeSelect) but decided to simply extend FieldType (in PW's core) so that it wouldn't be necessary  to have the FieldtypeSelect module installed as well.
